Damn it Netflix, why aren't you working? All I want to do is watch some Top Gear until I fall asleep.

Short answer: The internet in the US is fucked.
Long answer: The internet in the US is essentially controlled by a small handful of companies who have purchased legislators and legislation to protect their de facto monopolies over their regional distribution area. They are currently trying to gain even more power by eviscerating the last remaining protections consumers have from their ability to charge however much they see fit for how ever little service they can get away with. Add to that the two single largest players trying to merge to form one giant, unstoppable evil-mecha-company and we're so hosed.
Also in the mix is the battle over who has to pay to upgrade service when too many people actually use their 'high speed' internet to access content like Netflix. While those companies fight, consumers suffer through slow loading times and service interruptions.
No really we're fucked. It's been nice being able to chat on forums like this while it lasted.
